Transition

Transition to Primary School

At Kiewa Valley Primary School we recognise that beginning school is a very important step for all young children. We believe that your child’s first school experiences help to shape their interest in learning and form an integral part of their attitude towards schooling.

Our Transition Program provides an opportunity for children about to start school to attend a number of carefully structured half-day and full-day school visits. These visits allow children to participate in a wide variety of learning activities, whilst becoming familiar with our school environment and making valuable connections with the caring staff and students at our school.

At Kiewa Valley Primary School we also offer our Foundation and Grade 5 students a program called ‘Buddies.’ The Buddy Program has been running for a number of years and it is one of the many ways we help students entering their first year of primary school to feel safe, valued and connected to the school community. Grade 5 students are carefully paired with Foundation students in the year prior to them commencing school and they have regular opportunities to eat lunch together and complete enjoyable learning activities.

We also offer a parent information evening to provide parents with valuable information about our school and how to help your child be ready for starting school.

Transition from Primary to Secondary School

Our year six students participate in cluster transition days which gives them a chance to make new connections to students who will be attending Tallangatta Secondary College the following year. Staff from the secondary school also attend these days and are available to answer questions and lessen anxieties. Students also attend a two day headstart program in early December at the secondary school. Whilst the majority of our students attend Tallangatta Secondary College , a number also transition to various local independent and catholic settings who also provide transition programs to attending students.
